Obstruction - and the resultant resistance by the makers - have raised the film's status to that of an all-out banner of revolt against stupidity. Prakash Jha may have produced Lipstick Under My Burka, but it is Mr Pahlaj Nihalani who has generated all the noise that the film needed to ahead of its release. The burkha as a piece of outer clothing used to obviate temptations of the flesh - it could well have been the ghoonghat - is only a leitmotif in Alankrita Shrivastava's rebellious but even-toned film that got the goat of the man who undeservedly heads India's censor board and bleats a bit a too much against anything that he perceives as being at variance with his ultra-conservative worldview. Her eye and ear are perfectly in tune to her characters, who each have big beautiful beating hearts.Cast: Konkona Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak, Aahana Kumra, Plabita Borthakur, Sushant Singh, Vikrat Massey Lipstick is only Shrivastava's second directorial feature and yet she directs with the surety and beauty of a veteran filmmaker. It's a remarkable film about four wonderful characters staring into the face of oppression and still trying to live their dreams.
It comes from the movie Lipstick Under My Burkha from writer director Alankrita Shrivastava. User Review - 8/10 by Sean P "You know what our problem is? We dream too much?" User Review - 10/10 by Fong K Construed as too feminist in orientation and initially banned in India, this comedy alarms censors for its bold and honest assertion of female sexual liberation in a male chauvinist culture when they could be more afraid of its urgent and pointed social criticism. Kaplan - 6/10 by Jeanne Kaplan "Lipstick Under My Burkha" is not a perfect movie, but Shrivastava tries mightily to bring attention to the struggles of women in everyday India. Scroll.in - 6/10 by Nandini Ramnath The script wobbles as the four tracks evolve and get far too complicated to be smoothly straightened out, but it is at its entertaining best when the women get all hot and heavy. 7/10 by Siddhant Adlakha It may not offer all the answers or some ultimate victory for its entrapped women, but it's enough to help celebrate scattered moments of joy and rebellion amidst dreams of something better. The best part is, all four women and their stories and setups are perfectly real.ī.
